UX/UI Design & Industrial Design for the MalocherBot from Unchained Robotics

Unchained Robotics has set itself the goal of making robotics solutions affordable for SMEs. Their versatile MalocherBot robotic cells offer solutions for applications such as palletising and CNC assembly. Together with Unchained Robotics, we have comprehensively optimised the user interface and industrial design. These improvements significantly increase the attractiveness, ergonomics and user-friendliness and thus the enthusiasm for the system.

The aim was to make the robot cell housing more high-quality, modern and ergonomic in order to do justice to Unchained Robotics' corporate values. We also developed a user-friendly HMI that reduces training time from one day to a few hours and facilitates the acceptance of new systems through a standardised design concept. The flexible HMI concept adapts to growing complexity and additional customer requirements while ensuring standardisation for international service partners. Customers appreciate the new modular automation design and the HMI, as do Unchained Robotics employees.

Overall UX: User Interface Design & Industrial Design

More calm in the details

We have improved the industrial design in several areas. The design has been adapted to avoid visible screws and conceal fasteners in the sheet metal panelling. We have also made the sheet metal strips on the doors narrower to provide better access and a better view of the system. These changes have also increased modularity and allowed the use of more common parts.

A previously visible sash lock has been concealed, creating an ergonomic option for opening the side panel with a single action. We have visually reduced the operating buttons and integrated them into the housing. The handles have also been redesigned and now have a uniform colour, which makes the overall appearance of the system look more harmonious.

Overall Brand Design

Harmonious design

The overall image of the MalocherBot, industrial design and UI design, now appears more harmonious and coherent with reduced visual complexity. It harmonises with the Unchained Robotics logo and creates a higher impression of quality.

Living Brand

The Unchained Robotics logo visualises the agility of the high-tech start-up and the modularity of the robot cells through an organic-looking shape that mimics the movement of the robot arm. We have developed this shape into a dynamic brand pattern. It is used as a perforated pattern on the upper edge of the system in the industrial design and as a background visualisation in the user interface design. This design language is also taken up in fine details, such as the status display and the start-stop button in the UI.

Distance View

In the user interface design, the brand is particularly visible in the Distance View - the view that is shown when the user is not standing directly in front of the system and operating the display. In addition to performance data and production progress or status, the Unchained Robotics brand also comes to life here.

Production status

An intuitive solution was developed that makes it possible to recognise the status of the system and determine the next action at a glance. The organic shape of the brand visual was also used in the production status at the top of the screen and in many other places in the HMI.

Modular system

The HMI modular system developed in just a few months enables the rapid realisation of customer-specific solutions. By switching from individual 3D visualisations to schematic, modular representations, we have significantly reduced the project planning time. This modular approach saves time and money and allows developers, project planners and sales staff to put together the HMI quickly and without programming knowledge for different use cases. The flexible UI construction kit from Unchained Robotics adapts to both current and future requirements and ensures a high level of usability and consistency thanks to the tile concept. Overall, the increased efficiency reduces project planning costs and supports Unchained Robotics' goal of making robotics solutions affordable for SMEs.

Collaboration in an agile set-up

The collaboration with Unchained Robotics was excellent. The close dialogue with the design department made it possible to develop innovative ideas in industrial design. We achieved excellent results through iterative discussions and open collaboration between all parties involved. This agile approach was and is continued in user interface design, with initial versions being brought to market quickly and continuously improved. UX methods are flexibly adapted to the project requirements and new findings are regularly integrated. Feedback from project planners flows directly into the further development of the HMI modular system and the configuration software.
